There are plenty of ways to celebrate Yorkshire Day. Fly the White Rose, tuck into something local or declare, with complete confidence, that nowhere else quite measures up.
But before owt else, there should be coffee.
No arguing with the alarm clock. No gulping down half a cup while hunting for your keys. Just a proper brew, made properly, before deciding where the day might take you.
At Dancing Goat Coffee, we reckon that first cup deserves a bit of attention.

The quiet ritual before the celebrations
The first coffee of the morning is rarely just about caffeine.
It is the sound of beans being ground while the rest of the house is still stirring. It is the smell reaching the kitchen before you do. It is five quiet minutes with a favourite mug, perhaps accompanied by a slice of toast substantial enough to count as structural engineering.
However you prepare yours, the ritual matters.
Yorkshire appreciates things made with care. Good ingredients, honest workmanship and people who know their craft all count for plenty round here. A proper morning coffee fits neatly into that tradition. It does not need unnecessary fuss, but it does need to taste reyt.
That is why we roast our coffees to bring out the character of the beans, creating blends and single-origin coffees for different tastes and brewing methods. Whether you favour a dark, full-bodied espresso or something lighter and more delicate, the important thing is finding the coffee that makes you pause after the first sip and think, “Aye, that’ll do.”
High praise indeed.

A White Rose start to the day
For Yorkshire Day, there is one blend in our range that feels particularly at home in the morning mug: White Rose Republic.
It is the darkest roast in our collection, combining South American Arabica beans with a small amount of Robusta to produce an intense crema and a rich, smooth flavour. It is a confident coffee, built for those who like their first cup to arrive with its boots on.
Brew it as an espresso, use it as the foundation of a flat white or make a strong cafetière before breakfast. However it reaches your cup, it is a fitting way to raise a mug to Yorkshire.
You can find White Rose Republic alongside our other blends and single-origin coffees in the Dancing Goat Coffee at Home range.

Make a proper day of it
A good Yorkshire Day does not need an ambitious itinerary. There is no need to be dashing about like there’s summat chasing you.
Start slowly. Make breakfast. Brew coffee. Read the news, potter about or head out while the county is still stretching awake.
From there, you might browse a local market, visit an independent shop, explore a historic town or head into the countryside for a summer walk. There are moors, dales, coastlines, canals and cobbled streets aplenty, so you are rarely short of somewhere worth wandering.
Pack a flask of coffee, take your time and keep an eye on the weather. It is Yorkshire, after all. Four seasons before lunch is not unheard of.
And when it is time for another cup, you know what to do.
Coffee has a useful way of punctuating a day. There is the first brew, which makes everything possible; the mid-morning cup, which rewards you for having left the house; and the afternoon coffee, which provides a dignified defence against flagging energy.
We take all three seriously.

Brew it your way
There is no single correct way to make a Yorkshire Day coffee. That would only lead to an argument, and Yorkshire has enough strongly held opinions already.
Espresso drinkers might choose a dark, punchy roast. Pour-over fans may prefer something bright and aromatic. A cafetière is ideal for a leisurely breakfast, particularly when there are several mugs to fill and nobody is in a rush.
Whichever method you use, start with freshly roasted coffee, measure it consistently and use fresh water. Small details make a noticeable difference, although the best brewing equipment remains the one you actually enjoy using.
The same goes for mugs. Chipped favourites are permitted. Tiny handleless cups that require a safety briefing are less convincing before breakfast.
And if somebody asks whether you would like another brew, there is only one sensible answer: “Go on, then.”
Here’s to Yorkshire
Yorkshire Day is a chance to celebrate the county’s landscapes, towns, cities, food, history, humour and independent spirit. For us, it is also an opportunity to celebrate the everyday rituals that make a place feel like home.
A familiar kitchen. A favourite mug. Freshly ground coffee. A full day ahead, with no need to rush.
So, before the flags go up, before the market stalls open and before anyone begins debating which part of Yorkshire is best, put the kettle on.
Make a proper day of it, tha knows.
Start Yorkshire Day with a proper brew.
